ΓΕΝΙΚΑ

Τhe Institute of Marine Sciences aims to promote research and develop actions related to the protection and management of the marine environment considering also the exploitation of marine resources. The Institute will also act as an interface between research, administration, producers, stakeholders and citizens, promoting a sustainable development based on the comparative advantages of the extremely rich and of great scientific interest marine ecosystems of Western Greece. The aim is to coordinate the research units of the region focused on the marine and coastal ecosystems, the participation in the educational activity of the University of Patras and the support of all productive and management structures at Regional and National level, in the context of the “Blue Growth”.

Work experience
  • The development of fundamental and applied research in marine ecosystems aiming their detailed mapping, the analysis of their structure and functioning and their sustainable management.
  • The development of a reference point and the knowledge transfer on key issues concerning the marine environment, promoting the rich cultural heritage and the important natural resources of the marine ecosystems of Western Greece.
  • The creation of an interface between research, managers and stakeholders with the aim of an efficient, sustainable and inclusive development in accordance with international standards and the country's obligations.
  • The support stakeholders and the central and regional administration in matters related to the exploitation of resources and the protection of the marine environment.
  • The contribution to education, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with the participation of students in research programs and studies, as well as the implementation of actions at international level.
  • The promotion of the University of Patras through the development of actions and infrastructure for the collection, processing and dissemination of information and the awareness and participation of citizens in the monitoring and protection of marine ecosystems.
